The Center for Applied Linguistics define ebonics as "a dialect of American English used by many African Americans in certain settings and circumstances." Many people refer to it as urban slang but it is no longer defined as such; it is an American English dialect with its roots in Southern English.
Like most dialects, the vernacular changes over time with words added as they come into popularity. Ebonics is a language of the people, and in this spirit this primer is user created. Currently it contains 1609 entries.
